The story behind why the Little Mermaid cover art was banned... One of the spires is said to look like a male human body part, and not one that should be on the front of a Disney VHS video cover or associated with a G rated Disney movie. There are a couple of stories about why the castle spire was drawn in such a manner. The first story involves a disgruntled Disney employee. Urban legend says that the employee working on the Little Mermaid project was informed he would be laid off. In retaliation against his employer, Disney, he included something hidden and controversial in the cover art that would come back to harm the Disney brand image. The unfortunate mistake was on the cover for about a year, from 1990 - 1991, until an employee at a grocery store chain noticed the inappropriate castle spire and pulled the videos from their shelves. They contacted Disney about the issue, and the cover art was changed. Please note, you are buying the exact VHS pictured, it’s from early 1990s and is in LIKE NEW condition. It was watched once and tested. Quality is great! Because of the banned cover art, it’s a RARE collectible item.
