Description: THE LYDIAN SCALE: A Practical Guide to Improvisation The raised 4th is shown here as #4, but many musicians call it the #11 (remember, the 4th and the 11th are the same note). Until the 1960, most musicians called it a b5, but as more jazz musicians started thinking of scales when improvising, the b5 gave way to #4 or 11th. As you can see in the notation above, the 4th of the Cmajor scale has been raised, rather than the 5th lowered. Jazz musicians usually think of Lydian chords as being very modern, but George Gershwin used a Lydian chord as the first chord in the bridge of 'Someone to Look Over Me', which was written in 1926. And the chord in the sixth bar of 'Happy Birthday' (written in 1893) is a Lydian chord. To see how well known musicians use the Lydian scale, and it's altered expression, we'll check out some of their transcribed solos.45 pages This book can be downloaded as an e-book for half the price of the physical book + postage.
