Description: This book is the memoirs of Major General Henry Heth, a Division Commander in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. To my knowledge, no one has written a biography of him. So this is all we have. A prominent pre and post Civil War Virginian, Heth became most noted for his actions on the beginning of the Battle of Gettysburg. On July 1, 1863, General Robert E. Lee was trying to get all of his spread out Confederate his forces together in the area near the small 2400 inhabitant town of Gettysburg Pennsylvania on his invasion of the North. He urged his commanders not to bring on a battle before he had combined the Army of Northern Virginia. Needless to say, that was not to be. For some reason General Henry Heth led his division of Virginians down the Chambersburg Road toward Gettysburg and straight in the Union Amy pickets of General John Buford's cavalry division. The Battle of Gettysburg had begun before either side wanted it to. And Henry Heth's name accordingly went down into Civil War lore. He as also wounded in the battle. Read the book and you will get Heth's side of the story. The author provides a 63 page introduction to give the reader a good fore and back ground on General Heth, who was a West Point graduate. He also gives you 43 pages of notes, and an index. It's a scholarly book by Greenwood Press. Free CONUS media mail shipping.
