Seller has compared the painting's signature to other works recently sold as Victor Chavet originals and found it to be substantially similar in size, medium, technique, and subject matter.PROVENANCE: Bonhams 12/10/17, Lot #456. Identified as "Attributed to Victor Chavet".DISCUSSION: Appears to be one of a group of period genre paintings created by (or attributed to) Victor Chavet in the late Victorian period. Each of the paintings identify a biographical "type" The style of dress isn't contemporary to his early period 1840s-50s. It's 18th century apparel - in all such paintings. It resonates with historical revival in genre painting and literature in late 19th century. CAVEAT EMPTOR: Evaluators of the piece at Bonhams, possibly referencing the larger, more ambitious works by Chavet, and closely matching the brush work - which seems to be less complex and less refined than other known works by Chavet - did not attribute the work directly, though the painting has been signed. The buyer, therefore, should take the Bonhams opinion into account when considering purchasing the work. Keep in mind that larger Chavet paintings are in the range of $40,000 and $50,000. Even if it is a copy - it's well executed and delightfully decorative, especially in such an appropriate, high quality frame. Our price already reflects all the issues surrounding authenticity..
