A few years later, MAURICE WALSH expanded upon several of the other themes suggested within his tale, from which arose the novel GREEN RUSHES in 1935. Jump ahead to 1950, and JOHN FORD wanted to film a movie version of THE QUIET MAN, featuring the actors JOHN WAYNE and MAUREEN O'HARA; but Ford was working with Republic Pictures at the time, and the film that Ford had in mind would be a severe departure for Republic, whose output was largely action & adventure films. So Republic Pictures made a deal with JOHN FORD: Ford would produce another western (RIO GRANDE) with JOHN WAYNE and MAUREEN O'HARA, and Republic Pictures would finance Ford's vision of THE QUIET MAN -- to be filmed on location in Ireland, with a largely Irish cast, and in Technicolor -- all of which were seriously expensive deviations for Republic Pictures, which mostly produced b&w movies, filmed in the USA with American actors. But that wily old "JOHN FORD luck" struck again -- and THE QUIET MAN won two Academy Awards, including JOHN FORD's fourth Oscar for Best Director.
