Although dated February, the publisher released the periodical in early January, several weeks before the next printing of the poem in the New York Mirror. "The Raven" was not printed in its own book until the following November, about eleven months after the appearance in The American Review. The present volume contains the January to June issues of The American Review, which also features three additional examples of Poe's works: "Some Words With a Mummy" (p. 363, first printing), "The Valley of Unrest" (p. 392), and "The City of the Sea" (p. 393). Titling, ornamental rules, and devices in gilt on spine. January to June issues bound in one volume. Hinges and binding tight. Contents foxed, heaviest on the preliminary and terminal leaves, and much less pronounced in the more central portions of the text block ("The Raven" is minimally affected). Armorial bookplate of author Robert R. Dearden on the front pastedown. Small pencil note on the title page by the bookbinder ("6 vols, 1/2 turkey"); else free and clear of writing and underlining. Cloth soiled and stained. The spine is rubbed, but the gilt remains bright. Housed in a stunning full morocco leather clamshell case.
