Description: The story of San Michelle, Axel Munthe, 1937, John Murray - hdbk; 431 pages.; 4.5 x 7.5 inches approx. - universally acclaimed as an unforgettable story. - from Goodreads, online:The Story of San Michele (a villa built on the ruins of a Roman Emperor's villa in Capri) is a series of overlapping autobiographical vignettes, roughly but not entirely in chronological order. It contains reminiscences of many periods of the author's life. He associated with a number of celebrities of his times, including Jean-Martin Charcot, Louis Pasteur, Henry James, and Guy de Maupassant, all of whom figure in the book. He also associated with the very poorest of people, including Italian immigrants in Paris and plague victims in Naples, as well as rural people such as the residents of Capri, and the Nordic Laplanders. He was an unabashed animal lover, and animals figure prominently in several stories, perhaps most notably his alcoholic pet baboon, Billy. Remarkable, and Unforgettable! Condition:Good+ condition for this small format atlas. Book cover shows a little general aging/fading, plus minor edge-wear, plus a tanned/faded spine. Binding/hinges are tight/strong. No owner name inside, but Ex-Library, so inside both cover boards are stamps, pocket, bookplate, and stamp on page edges. No apparent age-tanning to pages. Interior has one additional library stamp, but is otherwise clean...practically no sign of wear or use. No DJ. Collectible.
