Profile Koichi Tohei was born on January 20, 1920 in Tokyo. Graduated from Keio University, Faculty of Economics.Studied under Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba from the age of 19. After the war, he studied under Nakamura Tenpu.In 1953, he went to the U.S. by himself and devoted himself to the worldwide spread of Aikido.In 1971, he founded the Ki Society.In 1974, he founded Shinshin-Unity Aikido, based on the principles of Ki (mind moving body).In 2007, he passed on all aspects of Shinshin-Unity Aikido to his son, Shinichi Tohei.He passed away on May 19, 2011 at the age of 91.
