Description: We are offering a very scarce copy of Robert Gould's works of Poetry, Love verses, Funeral Eulogies', romance, 18th century porn and religious tributes all from a poor lad who was quite talented in a number of activities. It was together by his widow. Martha Gould. We would consider the condition Very Good with all the defects noted. Gould began his poetic career with a number of odes to peers, and his odes to ladies are particularly stylised and idealistic. In the seventeenth century, a writer of an ode could expect remuneration, either in the form of a gift or, at the least, a higher fee from the bookseller in anticipation of sales to the flattered subject's supporters and family. Gould did sell his odes, but he appears to have made very little by them. In 1683, however, Gould changed employers and made a name for himself as an author by writing Love Given O'er: Or a Satyr on the Inconstancy of Woman. The poem was at least partially an imitation of Juvenal, but it pursued its theme of misogyny with a fury and detail even Juvenal would not have dared. The binding is another story. It was rebacked and rebound in the late 19th century by a Robert W. Smith in NYC. I purchased a number of like items and now getting around to putting the last of the group out for sale. The 18th century is age toned but solid and complete. The also appears to have been an addition to the title page and at a later date removed.
