Description: First edition hardcover of Death Comes to Tea, by Theodora Du Bois (Grosset and Dunlap, 1940). Theodora Du Bois wrote several mysteries featuring the husband and wife team of Jeffrey and Anne McNeill, based on the standard formulas popularized by British writers such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers. This novel, largely forgotten, bears the intriguing tag line (on the spine): "A laboratory experiment in murder is traced to Santa Claus...and beyond!" This book is in very good condition, with an intact dust jacket, a tight spine, bright pages and no rips, tears, or other major signs of wear. Previous owner's name in ink on the first page. NOTE: the dust jacket implies the existence of a previous "original" edition, published at a higher price. I can find no evidence that this earlier edition actually exists. Certainly no copies of it are to be found online or elsewhere. At any rate, this edition is extremely rare and collectible, whether the true first or not.
