This is a classic pulp fiction novel which was later adapted into a movie starring Humphrey Bogart. As a young man, Bezzerides worked as a truck driver, and then studied to become an electrical engineer at the University of California before dropping out to fulfill his ambition to write. This story involves two brothers who run a trucking business in California who struggle to make ends meet. Eventually one of the brothers goes to work for an old friend, who's wife is ambitious and wants to rise above her class. Eventually, things turn to murder in this classic film noir. The book was turned into a 1940 Warner Brothers movie starring George Raft, Humphrey Bogart and Ida lupino among others. staining or markings. The book includes some black and white illustrations.
