THORNTON WILDER - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 07/12/1951 - HFSID 140441 THORNTON WILDER. TLS: "Thornton Wilder," 1p, 8½x11. Cambridge, Mass., 1951 July 12. On lightweight paper. To William Cole, Alfred Knopf Inc., New York. In full: "It is many years since I read Ford's novel, but retain a great admiration for it. As for Parade's End, I dare not take the time to re-read it now and would not be able to phrase a characterization of it nor do I feel that a merely numerical statement such as you have suggested conveys much. All best wishes for the promotion, however." Ford Madox Ford (1873-1939), was an English novelist, editor and poet. Parade's End was the final volume in a celebrated series by Ford published between 1924 and 1928. The works of Wilder (1897-1975) include The Bridge of San Luis Rey (1928 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction), Our Town (1938 Pulitzer Prize in Drama), The Skin of Our Teeth (1943 Pulitzer Prize in Drama), and The Matchmaker (which became the musical Hello, Dolly!).
