Description: FIRST EDITION, second state ('wabe' on p. 21 ) published by MacMillan, 1872'An early copy, 'Tenth Thousand'. 7.4" x 5.1"Pages 224 (2)Illustrations Tenniel 50 Condition:Externally the binding of this classic book is very firm but it shows signs of wear with mild darkening/discolouration of the boards (not as light as the photographs suggest), wear and mild bumping of the corners, and fraying at the spine ends. The front hinge is intact, the rear hinge weakening but stable. The spine is badly sun-tanned and the gilt titles have almost entirely been eroded through light exposure. (see photos). Internally it is in very good, above average, condition, with text block square and tight and no loose pages. The original frontispiece tissue is present and all 50 of Tenniel's illustrations present and in excellent condition. There is a single edge mark on p.13 (photo) but apart from this all pages are very clean with no creases or tears. The black/slate end papers are in good condition with a small square label at the rear 'Bound by Burn & Co'. There are no inscriptions or other writing.An early First Edition in good firm condition with external wear but internally very good++.
