Description: Stoppard, Tom. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. London: Faber & Faber, 1967. Offered for sale is copy, jacketed and in hardcover, of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Tom Stoppard's masterpiece, in its first edition--the first printing, of 1967. This is the true first, published by Faber & Faber, in the year following the premiere. The book was withdrawn from a university library and retains the usual stamps, stickers, and paste-downs. Both the volume and the unclipped dust jacket, secure in a mylar protector, are in good condition. The volume is cocked and slightly bumped; it opens flat at pp. 32-3; there are a few stains, and some of the leaves (owing to the cocking) are folded slightly at the gutter; a small stain mars the cloth on the front cover; the front endpapers were abraded when (I presume) a paste-down was removed. The jacket shows: some wear at the edges; some discoloration, esp. where the classification label once stood; and an unhappy, though modest, wrinkle, at its front. A first impression from the first edition of Stoppard's play--which may be the greatest work of drama written in English after 1945--is a true rarity. I invite you to make me an offer. The book will be dispatched, for free, by FedEx Ground, and a signature will be required on delivery.
