George is an experienced railroad enthusiast, and regularly presents his slides to gatherings of historical societies around his current hometown of Rockford, Illinois. He has also made numerous contributions to other books (including one of my own) and, as such, is aware of the level of interest that exists in the railroad scene of the mid-20th century. Instead, George was uncertain that his work was of a quality that would merit publication in a volume of its own. Readers will be able to judge for themselves, of course, but I believe it will become immediately clear to anyone familiar with the genre of railroad publications that George is an extraordinarily talented photographer. As the project got underway, it soon became apparent that we were going to have a hard time circumscribing the scope of this volume. George's passion is unapologetically passenger trains, and he traveled widely during the 1960s and early 1970s to photograph them. For this reason, the majority of the photos included are of passenger trains, power, rolling stock, people and facilities. As was the case with some photographers of the era, freight train photos for George were "filler," something to do while waiting for the local or the limited to arrive. Readers who may be critical of this viewpoint should be mindful that the 1960s were a time of diminishing fortunes for the passenger railroads, and trains were dropping from the pages of the Official Guide at a frightening rate. Implicit in the minds of many photographers was that the freight trains would "always" be there, but the passenger runs required immediate documentation, lest the opportunity be lost forever. Sadly, this viewpoint proved correct. The second consideration was geography. In his travels to photograph trains, George wandered the land, from California to Texas to Louisiana to Georgia and the northeast. Though an attractive possibility, to produce a volume sampling his entire collection would be prohibitive in terms of size, cost and marketing. Thus in the end, with the input and guidance of publisher Bob Yanosey, we settled on Illinois as our venue. Most, but not quite all of the images included were taken in the area roughly bounded by Chicago in the northeast, St. Louis in the southwest, and East Dubuque in the northwest. However, because a few photos were simply too good to pass up, we have occasionally strayed off the reservation to places like Clinton and Davenport, Iowa, Milwaukee and even Nashville. That said, most of the photos in this book are right where they should be, and rail enthusiasts familiar with the Prairie State will find much that they recognize. Finally, this book is not, and does not claim to be, a definitive look of Illinois railroads in the 1960s. That is beyond the scope of a collection such as this and, indeed, beyond that of any single volume. Instead, as is the case with other books in the Trackside series, it is an opportunity to savor the photographic work of a single individual during a limited period of time. In that, I am confident readers will not be disappointed. The book is generally organized in alphabetical order, by railroad. The exception is the first railroad presented, the Rock Island. George is a native of Moline, Illinois, and the Rock Island is his hometown railroad. As such, it was his wish that the book lead off with "his" road, and so it does. For the rest, we have stuck with the format. In some instances, there are a great many photos, in others only a handful. The quantity of photos for each road is a reflection of several things, including the need to stay in (or at least close to) Illinois, the period during which the photos were taken and, of course, George's own interest. Obviously the biggest single source of information for this volume is the photographer's own recollections, and George and I spent many an hour together reconstructing events that led to a particular photo having been taken. In addition, my own familiarity with passenger trains and geography helped, if only in small measure. All pictures are of the actual item. There may be reflection from the lights in some photos. We try to take photos of any damage. If this is a railroad item, this material is obsolete and no longer in use by the railroad. Please email with questions.
