Trade Cards Illustrate U.S. Navy History, Armored Vessels, Troy, NY, Paint

Description: Offering a spectacular assemblage of three chromolithographed trade cards, 5 x 3 ¾, from a series designated “440”, copyrighted in 1889. Overprinted for the American Seal Floor and Deck Paints with the verso advertising for the manufacturers William Connors, Troy NY. Connors moved into a larger premise on River Street in Troy. The “Krupp” gun image was particularly timely as the 100 ton was adopted by the U.S. Navy in competition with the British Armstrong 100 ton. A second trade card mentions the “Modern Man of War,” which probably refers to the Sino Chinese War and the French Naval victory of 1885. A third trade card, entitled Battle of the “Monitor and Merrimac,” is a reference to the March 9, 1862 battle, also called the Battle of Hampton Roads in the Civil War. It was a naval engagement at Hampton Roads, Virginia, a harbor at the mouth of the James River, notable as history’s first duel between ironclad warships and the beginning of a new era of naval warfare. In excellent condition and beautifully designed. Everything we sell is guaranteed authentic forever to the original buyer. We also offer a 30-day return policy. If you discover a problem or are dissatisfied with an item, please contact us immediately. Our goal is to please every customer. We are pleased to be members of Preferred Autograph Dealers and Auction Houses, The Manuscript Society, The Ephemera Society and the Southern New England Antiquarian Booksellers. [AM 227]
