Description: TREASURE! Bonanzas Worth a Billion Bucks by Xanthus CarsonPaperbackTreasure Chest Publications 1974ISBN 0-918080-37-1NEW This book assists the prospector, the treasure hunter, and the fortune seeker in the location of lost bonanzas, as well as to provide pleasurable reading for those who do not make field explorations. Twenty-four chapters were carefully selected from a long list of previously published magazine articles to make up this work. These constitute approximately thirty waybills that could lead to fortunes that conservatively figure more than a billion bucks. 182 pages, well-illustrated, authentic maps. Written on the back cover: Lost bonanzas worth “more than a billion bucks,” to quote the author, are described in this collection of treasure legends, all based on heavy field research: $400,000,000 in gold bullion and other loot which bandits hijacked from shipments to Spain and stored in New Mexico's mountain caves. $33,000,000 in gold hidden in a deep bedrock tunnel in Colorado by French miners in the 1770s. $5,000,000 cache of gold south of Tucson, Arizona revealed by a dying prospector. $3,000,000 worth of gold ingots, hidden in sandhills of far West Texas by miners returning from California. These and some twenty-five other treasure legends offer enough promises of lost mines and buried money to be discovered to keep any treasure hunter awake at night trying to sort out the right clues. And clues there are aplenty, for the writer has sifted out the facts as recorded in Mexican archives and church documents; he has searched through old newspaper files and interviewed early settlers who heard the legends from their grandfathers. After following up on many conflicting leads and weighing all the evidence, he makes this pronouncement: "There are too many authentic accounts to refute the existence of these lost bonanzas." Here, too, are all the trappings of suspenseful mystery stories — a ghost village, a dire curse protecting a treasure trove, confused directions dictated at the point of death. This all adds up to some mighty satisfactory reading for would-be treasure seekers. Then there are the maps and the photographs — thirty-five of them — to make the impossible suddenly seem very real. To aid the modern-day prospector in his search, the author pinpoints locations with reference to current placenames and numbered highways. He warns that time may have erased many clues by changing important features of the terrain — a landslide now covers the entrance to a cave, a key tree has been struck down by lightning, heavier growth conceals a canyon. But, fortified with hope and equipped with a metal detector, you just might strike it rich!
