Description: Tree Peony, Paeonia suffruticosa, Seeds Large Showy Flowers, Attracts Butterflies, Long Lived, Cold and Heat Tolerant The Tree Peony, native to western China, Bhutan and Tibet, is a deciduous, woody shrub that typically grows 3 to 5 feet tall with a 4 foot spread. Large flowers, 6 to 8 inches across, with pink to white petals, bloom in early spring. Flowers are extremely showy and are excellent as cut flowers. Medium green foliage is deeply divided into oval to lance-shaped leaflets and remains attractive throughout the growing season either alone or backdrop for other flowering plants. Tree peonies are known for their aggressive suckering tendencies and are useful in deciduous hedges or borders. They also make excellent accents along driveways or paths and are very well suited to the woodland garden. Tree Peonies do not need much pruning, just remove unwanted suckers, dead wood and side shoots. These long-lived plants usually take several years to establish and are best left undisturbed once planted.
