Description: "Well,” said George, “we’ll have a big vegetable patch and a rabbit hutch and chickens. And when it rains in the winter, we’ll just say the hell with goin’ to work, and we’ll build up a fire in the stove and set around it an’ listen to the rain comin’ down on the roof.” Here we offer the TRUE first retail edition, first print run, of the classic, canonical American novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, published in 1937 by Covici-Friede, New York. The first printing of this book was limited to just 2,500 copies. Every single one of those copies that survives has the first print-run points of a dot between the 8's in the page number on page 88 and the word "pendula" on the next to last line of page 9, as this one does. This true first print run is very rare and sought-after, but you must be careful to check for those two first printing points. If the "pendula" and the dot are NOT present, you have a subsequent printing. Subsequent printings that are retail first editions ALL have a subsequent print run listed on the copyright page. Subsequent printings that are book club editions look just like this one (no mention of print run) but do NOT have the "pendula" and dot on page 88. These book club editions are falsely sold all over eBay as first retail editions. (btw: To a trained eye, firsts also clearly look older than book club editions.) This copy does not have its original dust jacket. Original dust jackets are very valuable, but, only if they are NOT price-clipped. If they are price-clipped, they are likely book club dust jackets (and the piece that is clipped was actually just a corner that had no price). This copy instead comes wrapped in the highest quality facsimile of the first edition dust jacket you can only get here, digitally remastered and printed on coated heavyweight bond. The polymer coating on the paper ensures the brightest colors and sharpest prints, as the ink sits atop the paper rather than being absorbed into the fibers. Also included in your purchase is a copy of a collection of period newspaper reviews of Mice and Men and a Gisella Loeffler-illustrated newspaper feature by Margaret Camp entitled "Memoirs of a Grape Picker." Moisture-stained linen boards have little wear (please see pics). Intact, uninscribed endpapers have light stains at gutter. Binding is very tight and square; text is very clean, bright, and crisp. 186 pages, approximately 7.5 x 5.5-inches. The dust jacket is sleeved in ph-neutral Mylar and ready to slip into your collection. This classic first will make a wonderful centerpiece to your firsts collection or a very special gift.
