With their carbines they were able to pour forth a volume of steady, sustained fire upon their enemey - or smash them in a daring charge. On the other hand, the Dakota, like most Plains Indians were courageous individualsts fighting for personal honor and glory. They went into battle in bands of varying size, depending upon the personal reputations of their leaders. Singly, they were superb fighters, but in open battle they were no match for disciplined troops with the advantage of modern weaponry. At the Little Big Horn on June 25th, 1876, however, the Seventh Cavalry engaged an Indian force of great numbers. It was their severest test and one of the most famous of all the battles of the old West!
