Illegitimate son of Suzanne Valadon (the traveling acrobat who became Degas' favored model and later a painter herself), Utrillo wasan early victim to alcoholism. His first drawings and paintings, though executed under constraint, were submittedto as a remedy; yet showed remarkable originality. With only nature and intuition as his masters, Utrillo worked with a subtle and profound, innate knowledge of his craft. Though he staggered from cafe to prison to asylum to his desolate mother's, he was able to develop a sincere and gentle freshness in his famous Paris perspectives. This Pochoir-Lithograph is after an original gouache or oil by Utrillo, ·printed in a large edition at an undetermined date, with the signature printed from the stone. Black lines and some colored areas were printed by lithographic method and probably drawn on the stone by Utrillo himself. Most of the colored areas were printed by the pochoir technique. The entire project was supervised and approved by Utrillo. No catalogue of Utrillo's limited graphic production has been compiled. A small list with some measurements, titles, and dates is included in the catalogue for the Utrillo exhibition held at· the Kunstmuseum, Bern, Switzerland, in January -- March of 1963.
