Rough wood: Orchid roots tend to cling better to rough wood than to smooth wood. Rot-resistant hardwood: Rot-resistant hardwood is more durable than many softwoods. Cedar: Cedar has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties that can benefit orchids. Orchids are epiphytes. That means they grow on trees in nature. More like an air plant than a terrestrial. Species that do well in baskets are Cattleyas, Vandas, Epidendrums, Oncidiums, Dendrobiums, Phalaenopsis and many more. Tie your orchid to the basket using plant ties, jute, wire, even zip ties! You can tie your orchid directly to the basket and it will attach its roots to the porous exposed wood. If the orchid you are planting needs more moisture, you can add a variety of medium to the basket. Large lava rock for cattleyas and vandas, Larger chunks of bark for dendrobiums and epidendrums or add an orchid mix for some other types.
