Description: These are two photos in cases which I believe to be daguerreotypes. they were popular from the 1840s to the 1880s. the larger one is 3 1/4" by 3 5/8". It is a young man in formal dress. It has faded. It is bordered by a brass scrolled mat inside what I believe is leather, wood and velvet case. It has a mall brass closure. The case is in two pieces. The other smaller one is of a child. It is 2 7/8" by 2 3/8". This photo is clear and the case is all in one piece. To me, it looks as if the case had come apart and repaired with a black grosgrain ribbon. The same repair could be done on the larger one. Daguerreotypes were very popular in the mid-1800s. Soldiers gave them to their sweethearts or wives, and women made them to give their sweethearts as they went off to war. Parents had photos made of their children. Immigrants gave them families that might never see again. Daguerreotypes are often used interchangeably with ambrotypes and tintypes, but here are differences. The price is for both.
