Description: 30 FRESH SEEDS, HAND HARVESTED FOR THIS SEASON All of our seeds ship with tracking.THEY LOVE HEAT AND SUNSHINE and are VERY DROUGHT TOLERANT…as illustrated by my photo #4, of the tree planted in the highway median….getting no care beyond Nature and the occasional spring pruning. THEY ARE SUPER TREES AND AREN’T PLANTED ENOUGH. Mexican Buckeyes, members of the soapberry family, are related to the North American species, but Mexican Buckeyes are such unusual plants that they are the only species in their genus. Despite their common name, they range mostly west of the Brazos River in Texas into southern New Mexico and south into northeastern Mexico. They somewhat resemble redbuds as they bloom at roughly the same time in the spring, but timing is where the resemblance ends. Unlike redbuds, their rosy pink blooms burst out in the spring at the same time as their new bronzy leaves emerge… and the deciduous leaves are pinnate and feathery, going brilliant yellow in the fall. The blossoms quickly give way to green then brown, leathery tri-lobed fruit (or seed pods) that hang on through the winter. The large, beautiful, shiny black seeds are about 1/2” to 5/8” in diameter. They have been used by children as marbles and drilled to be used as beads and buttons. Evidence of their use by the indigenous peoples of northern Mexico dates back 8000 years. This plant may be used as a large, multi-trunk shrub or trained up into a tree. Its basal branching, tall spreading habit makes it a very suitable choice for an attractive tall deciduous screen. Mexican Buckeye is very easily propagated by seed. I just throw a few into a pot of good potting soil and compost, keep them watered, and stand back. THEY ARE VERY HEAT AND DROUGHT TOLERANT. They also tolerate a wide variety of soils: clay, loam, sand, acidic, alkaline, well-drained. They love full sun BUT make wonderful understory trees as well….growing to taller heights in full sun situations. MATURE HEIGHT: 15 - 30 feet, growing taller in full sun USDA HARDINESS ZONES: 7 and south into Mexico USES: Container or above-ground planter, landscape specimen, deciduous screen RECOMMENDED FOR BUFFER STRIPS around parking lots and median strips in highways, near decks or patios OUTSTANDING ORNAMENTAL features and should be planted more GREAT WINTER interest with its beautiful fall leaf color display, then the gray/brown/black mottled bark, and very nice persistent seed pods. PESTS AND DISEASES: none of major concern THESE SEEDS ARE FRESH, HOMEGROWN, HANDPICKED AND CLEANED, AND WERE COLLECTED FOR THIS PLANTING SEASON I CAN MAKE BULK QUANTITIES AVAILABLE IN SOME OF THE SEEDS I OFFER, AND WELCOME INQUIRIES! SHIPPING W/TRACKING (USPS Retail Ground) OR PRIORITY SHIPPING AVAILABLE ON REQUEST AT CHECKOUT ****I am happy to respond to inquiries and give the best information I have. ABOUT OUR SEEDS (A SORT OF DISCLAIMER): ***We grow, harvest, clean and store our seeds, ourselves.*** **Some plants are restricted by various states. We will notify you if we are aware of any restriction, but we mostly know about restrictions here in Texas. ULTIMATELY IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE BUYER to verify if your purchase is restricted by your state, county or city government. **INTERNATIONAL BUYERS......While we are happy to ship seeds internationally, WE DO NOT OFFER PHYTOSANITARY CERTIFICATES. Again, IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE BUYER to verify whether or not seeds might be banned from import into that country and might be seized at customs. **MANY of the seeds we offer are NOT annuals with quick starts and short lifespans. Most are particularly suited to withstand the the extreme heat of central Texas summers. Some will take things entirely at their own pace and require a really warm soil and/or other special treatment for "quicker" germination...and germination MAY require weeks, months and longer. **There are all manner of predators and conditions which can affect, hamper or even destroy germination....like molds, soil fungi, bugs, birds, squirrels, armadillos, pets and other varmints, soil and air temps (day AND night), water, light, care or lack thereof, contamination of planting media, and the list goes on. **Germination tips are sent with each variety of seeds. The general method that works well for us in our location, particularly. **BUYERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO DO THEIR OWN RESEARCH for their particular areas. The internet abounds in information. Grower forums, county extension agents, and local nurseries can also be quite valuable sources. ** "FLOATING SEEDS" is not necessarily an indication of seeds with no viability. In some species, floating is the indicator that the seed IS viable....and in some species (like citrus) both sinkers and floaters will germinate, depending on the maturity and freshness of the seed. **** THANKS! **** _gsrx_vers_823 (GS 7.0.12 (823))SaveSaveSaveSaveSaveSave
