Description: UNIFORMS OF THE ELITE FORCES Including the SAS and American Special Forces Leroy Thompson and Michael Chappell. London, 1985, Blandford, UK hard bound in dust jacket, 5 x 8, VG/VG condition, light dj wear, 130 pages, well illustrated with 96 figures in color of world's Elite Forces, and descriptions. ( plates by Mike Chappell) Although the elite warrior has his origins in ancient times and has sustained a romantic image down the centuries, the concept of Special Forces as we know it today has its origins in the Second World War. Hitherto those who ventured behind the lines in 'Cloak' and with 'Dagger' on clandestine missions were spies, but Britain's Special Air Service Regiment first proved in the Western Desert between 1941-3 that there was a new role for the Army to perform deep in enemy territory.Similarly the Commando, Ranger and Airborne Soldiers were born in the Second World War but the lessons learned from the unconventional use of specially trained military units in those years of conflict did not necessarily point the way to the operational use of elite forces after the war. Military thinking today is based on the need to combat the revolutionary and the necessity to plan for nuclear war. The elite soldier has therefore to train for both roles and in so doing he must indeed be a very superior warrior, operating perhaps in his own streets and countryside or far behind the enemy lines. He may be a politician 'winning the hearts and minds' of the guerrilla fighters but he must always remain - and fight like - a soldier. The title of this book uses the current expression 'elite' to define the soldier recruited into the United States Special Forces, the British SAS and all those other elitists who choose freely to lead in battle. The 32 pages of colour illustrations show 96 uniformed and battle dressed figures from around the world THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING WITH US - WE VERY MUCH APPRECIATE YOUR BUSINESS.
