Description: ‘Olga’One of my pieces of the year, this incredible and poignant English mourning locket is made of Whitby Jet and commemorates the short life of a child. Possibly named after the Soviet Empire Duchess born that same year, little Olga lived only 8 months and will have been the child of a Soviet ex-pat or diplomat to the UK - someone of considerable means, as this custom piece would have cost a small fortune to commission. A wide and chunky pendant with deeply rounded sections of Whitby Jet to front and back, it has its original fitted and fully matching, gold lined hanging bale ring that tapers beautifully, and solid gold or base metal fittings depending on how durable they needed to be. The letters of her name are picked out in solid gold, superbly finely set along their length with seed pearls - each one of these nestling in a hand etched gold cell, giving detail and a sense of quality without compromise. The locket itself hinges open to show a beautifully hand painted and coloured portrait of Olga herself, and to the other side a commemorative bone panel stunningly finely hand lettered ‘Olga, Born Sep 13 1882, Died May 22 1883’. The lettering here is superbly finely marked, with naturalistic serif flourishes like branches or vines. It’s in incredible, practically unworn condition, with no signs of wear and only a couple of very small edge nicks to the jet - unusual as jet is a fragile natural material greatly liable to damage. Pieces of this age and quality rarely make it this far in this condition. Weighing in at 33.0 grams, it’s a lovely size at 2.25" x 1.5" including the hanging bale.
