The 1805 election result in Georgia was contested by Spalding who was initially defeated by Cowles Mead for seat in the House of Representatives. Evidence was submitted to show why the election results of Cowles Mead over Thomas Spalding should be overturned. The election for the House seat was the first Monday of October 1804 (October 7) Cowles Mead had received 4438 votes to Spalding's 4269 giving Mead a majority of 169 votes. Governor John Milledge proclaimed Mead the winner after twenty days. However the vote from the counties of Tatnal, Liberty and Camden counties were not counted. Another certificate from the Secretary of State, dated November 27th, 1804 included the votes from Tatnal, Liberty and Camden. The totals (received over 20 days past the election) showed Spalding with 235 votes to Mead's 27. Thus, Spalding had a majority of 39 votes. An explanation for the late votes given in this report were bad roads and travel due to a recent hurricane. The House election committee found in favor of Spalding and reversed the seat held by Mead. The capitol of Georgia in 1804 was in Louisville, Jefferson County. American imprints, Second series 9605. Very good. Seller ID: 33223 Subject: Georgia, Political David A.
