U.S. AIRMAIL STAMP WITH "RF" OVERPRINT -- 1944

Description: THIS IS A U.S.A. AIRMAIL STAMP (C25) WITH AN "R.F." OVERPRINT ISSUED DURING 1944-1945 IN FINE-VERY FINE MINT, NEVER HINGED CONDITION. Kindly see the photos -- front and back -- to view this stamp. The "R.F." (Republique Francaise) overprints are listed in the U.S. Specialized catalog , and, this control mark was authorized for the exclusive use by French naval personnel. The stamps had to be posted on board French naval ships and had to meet strict security standards, then had to pass censoring. The "R.F." handstamp overprint was applied only after the stamp was affixed for mailing, and was approved by French naval authorities, and received a special naval cancellation. Thus, the status of unused stamps seems questionable, they are alleged to have been handstamped at a later date. The few copies we have left come from a collection acquired many years ago, and never had reason to question their authenticity. This specific overprint resembles the Type b overprint with a value in the 2020 Scott U.S. Specialized catalog of $550.00, used on cover.
