Description: Offered for auction here is the booklet entitled "Aleutian Islands". Japanese military forces invaded and occupied Attu, Kiska, Shemya and other small islands at the western tip of the Aleutian chain in 1942. The US had advance knowledge of the attack, as it had hacked into the Japanese military code, but the US elected not to commit a large force to the defense, as it was preparing for the great naval battle at Midway Island. With the loss of Midway, the Aleutian bases did not have as much value for Japan, but this did keep the US from using this area to stage attacks against the Japanese. The US re-captured Attu in May 1943, Kiska in August 1943.
