Description: THIS LOT CONTAINS A COLLECTION OF TWENTY-SIX (26) DIFFERENT NAVAL COVERS FROM POLAR OPERATIONS POSTMARKED BETWEEN 1947-1986, AND IN FINE-VERY FINE CONDITION. These polar operation covers include both north and south pole activities, as conducted by the Navy and the Coast Guard. Some of the official designations include 'operation deep freeze', 'operation highjump', 'under polar cap cruises', etc., and the postmarks originate from different stations (Byrd, McMurdo, South Pole, etc), or, ships (Westwind, Arneb, Atka, Glacier, Mount Olympus, Northwind, Polar Sea, etc), or by plane. The number of covers and the year of postmark is as follows: 1940's— 1, 1950's —2, 1960's — 12, 1970's —8, 1980's —3 a total of 26 covers. A few words concerning value: The Universal Ship Cancellation Society (USCS) is the primary organization for the study, classification, identification, and, valuation of naval covers. Coast Guard vessels are beyond the scope of their work, however, by applying USCS standards approximate valuations can be determined for Coast Guard and related covers. The catalogs USCS offer detaiiing cachets and postmarks are essential for a determination of value, and they simplify valuations by recognizing only a few categories: "A" - common, $1-$2.00 each, "B" - limited, $3-$6.00 each, "C" - scarce - $7-$10.00 each, and, "R" -rare (4 groups), above $10.00 each. The factors affecting value are primarily the cachet and the postal cancellation for the specific ship, however value is also enhanced by fancy cancellations, errors, signed covers, 'photo' cachets, back of cover markings, and other markings. Every cover is illustrated so that you can actually see all the factors that determine a final value. A starting point in the determination of value would be the postmark for a specific ship. Most of the official date stamps for major ship events (launch, commission, etc) are rated "B" ($3-$6.00 each) — there are numerous "B" rated covers in the group. Depending upon the cachet and other markings, the rating could be elevated to "C"-- it is doubtful that rare covers ("R") are included. Similarly, an ordinary cover ("A" rating) could be elevated due to the scarcity of the cachet or other markings. These covers have not been screened for scarce postmarks, cancellations, cachets, or, other premium characteristics, and would merit further study.
