The USAF 526th Fighter Interceptor Squadron was a United States Air Force unit that was active from 1955 to 1987. The squadron was stationed at various airbases in the United States and overseas during its existence, including Ramstein Air Base in Germany and all three bases of the Air Defense Weapons Center in Florida.The primary mission of the 526th Fighter Interceptor Squadron was air defense. The squadron flew a variety of aircraft, including the F-86D Sabre, the F-102 Delta Dagger, and the F-106 Delta Dart. These aircraft were designed to intercept and engage enemy aircraft in the event of an attack on the United States or its allies.In addition to its air defense missions, the 526th Fighter Interceptor Squadron also deployed to Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War to support ground operations. In 1968, the squadron was temporarily deployed to Da Nang Air Base in South Vietnam, where it provided air support for ground troops and conducted combat air patrols over the region. The squadron's F-106 aircraft were also used to escort B-52 bombers during bombing runs over North Vietnam.In 1972, the squadron was deployed to Southeast Asia to support Operation Linebacker II, which was aimed at disrupting North Vietnamese supply lines during the Vietnam War.
