Description: For offer is a great vintage USC&GS hydrographic station pointer. This is marked 110954 Usc&gs. There is a secondary mark of istituto idrografico. The box this is in may not be original to the instrument. It looks like it was retrofitted to hold this and its parts. Different woods and different felts. The box appears to be antique originally and probably retrofitted in the late 50’s to accommodate new equipment. He box has some cracks and some light damage. There is some tape and remnants from a label on the box. There are many screws that are visible all over the box showing its construction. Dove-tail on the corner joints. The clasps are really cool old ship box clasps. There is a knot in the wood on the top of the box that has some loose bits and a missing piece leaving a bit of a cavity behind. There is some water marks from a cup or similar. The interior has had some parts glued in with visible glue around the newer parts. There is one screw holding a newer part that is a little proud of the top, in the middle. This is a very cool old box with a great instrument. This was in service at a time when the USC&GS first began world wide documenting of waters previously undocumented, specifically the Indian Ocean. This was found at an estate and I was told it came from the estate of Don Jones, who was the rear admiral in charge of the USC&GS until the 1970 dismantling of the USC&GS. It is believed that this was his and his older box from older equipment. Was on board when he sailed the Indian Ocean. This was told to me and is Not confirmed. It was found in an estate near Seattle where he passed in 2000. Please see pictures for details and condition. Reach out to me with any questions.
