Description: U.S.S. California Battleship BB-44 Real Photo Black & White Post Card RPPC Postmarked 19405.5 inches x 3.5 inches The U.S.S. California was one of the ships moored at Pearl Harbor at the time of the attack on December 7, 1941. It sustained damage and many men were killed. The ship sank a few days after the attack but over the next several months it was salvaged and repaired and was finally floating again in 1942. The ship was decommissioned on 14 February 1947 and remained in the Navy's inventory for another decade before being stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 1 March 1959. She was thereafter sold to the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation on 10 July and broken up. The 350-pound cast bronze bell was saved and put on display in Sacramento at the California State Capitol Park. This Pacific Aerial Surveys post card was postmarked June 20, 1940 from Bremerton, Washington. The 1 Cent George Washington stamp is included but loose from the card.
