Description: This lot contains a USS Macon dirigible flight cover (not flown) from May 7, 1934, as described below. The postmarks and cachets commemorate the passing of the USS Macon over various locations or Navy ships. As the USS Macon and USS Akron were military vessels, little, if any, mail was carried after the first few flights of the Akron in 1932 and two flights - one in 1933 and one in 1934 - by the Macon. This cover commemorates a part of the 10th flight of the USS Macon from Moffett Field. This flight left Moffett Field on April 20th and returned on May 18th. During the flight it was moored at Opa Locka, Florida, and made additional trips to the Caribbean. This cover commemorates the trip leaving on the 5th and returning to Opa Locka on the 7th. Cover included:5/7/1934 Opa Locka, FL, cancel with Edward Hacker "Caribbean Flight ZRS-5 Returns to Opa Locka" cachet, Ullmann/Mellone's #8 for this date. The cover has a sealed flap. It is addressed to the cachet-maker. Condition is as shown in the pics. The cover shows minimal toning and is in quite nice shape. Ullmann/Mellone's reports 20 covers made and values that cover at $95.00. I am listing a number of covers either flown or commemorating flights every week.
