Description: USS SOUTH CAROLINA BB-26 USN Battleship first day cover with a postmark on April 14, 1982 from Columbia, SC. Color photo cachet #2123 by Alvin Eckert #9964 USCS. Cover franked with a 20 cent SC State Birds and Flowers stamp (FDOI). This 452 foot 16K ton SC Class battleship was built at Philadelphia's Cramp Shipyard. She was launched on 11 July 1908 and commissioned on 1 March 1910. She had eight 12 inch guns, twenty-two three inch guns, two 3 pounders, eight one pounders and two 21 inch submerged torpedo tubes. The ship was heavily armored and considered America's first dreadnought. The proud new vessel served in pre-First World War Atlantic Fleet. She made voyages to Europe, and Caribbean, including the US interventions in Haiti and Mexico. During the First World War she escorted a convoy part-way to France, but trained sailors along the US Atlantic coast for the most part. In February-July 1919 she acted as a troop transport bringing home over 4,000 servicemen in four voyages. In the 1920s she made a cruise to the Pacific and returned by the new Panama Canal. After a voyage to Europe she was decommissioned in 1921 and sold to be recycled into scrap metal in 1924 in accordance with the Washington Naval Treaty.
