USS South Dakota: this 680 foot South Dakota Class battleships, was commissioned March 20, 1942. Her first battle was off Tarawa in the Pacific Theater, where she earned 13 battle stars in most of the major South Pacific battles. This fighting battleship was decommissioned in 1947 and placed in the Norfolk Reserve Fleet until 1962, when she was sold to be recycled into scrap metal.
