The Eighty Years' War: having joined the Holy Roman Empire under the reign of Charles V (1500-1558), the Dutch United Provinces revolted against the Spanish yoke upon the investiture of Philip II of Spain. Tensions, both economic and religious and political, are developing into a full-blown war. It was at the end of an 80-year conflict that the United Provinces obtained their independence with the signing of the Peace of Westphalia (1648). Guillaume Baudaert, Boudart or Baudartius, is a Calvinist historian, poet and theologian, born in Deynze in 1565 and died in Zutphen, Gelderland, in 1640. In October 1576, the rebel troops (composed of nearly 20,000 men) entered the city, whose governors had opened the gates to them, and took up position to storm the castle defended by the Spanish troops commanded by Sancho d'Avila. The mutineers of Aalst (about 1,600 men), who had previously refused to obey any orders, without having received what was due to them, on hearing the news of the attack, marched all night towards Antwerp to help the besieged. They arrived in the city on the morning of the fourth and managed to enter the castle and join other units (600 men commanded by Julián Romero and Alonso de Vargas) who had rushed from different places to rescue Avila. Despite the numerical superiority of the rebel troops, the mutineers and the castle garrison launched an attack in the streets of the city, forcing the Dutch to flee. Some of these took refuge in the town hall, firing musket shots at the Spaniards. The latter set fire to the town hall and the fire spread to the city. In great disorder, the Spanish troops sacked the city for three days.
