Description: This activity set, that focuses on adding money and has a Valentine's Day theme, is adorable! It is brand new and in excellent condition! I laminated the pieces for durability and so the recording sheets could be written on with a fine-tip dry erase marker and then wiped clean with a tissue or cloth, so they could be reused! This set comes from a smoke free home. I received this set at a Title I, Math inservice for elementary school teachers. It consists of an illustrated header that measures 8.5" x 11", an illustrated direction sheet that measures 8.5" x 11", a "Valentine's Day Gift Shop" price sheet that measures 8.5" x 11", 2 recording sheets that measure 8.5" x 11", an answer key that measures 8.5" x 11", 8 illustrated sale item cards that measure 5.125" x 4", and 20 task cards that also measure 5.125" x 4". I did color in the heart, in the upper right-hand corner of the recording sheets, with colored pencils, just to add some color, as they were originally just black and white. This cute holiday game requires the addition of 2 prices to figure out the total value of a sale. As regrouping is involved, it is geared toward 2nd and 3rd graders. The "Valentine's Day Gift Shop Math Word Problems" header has red text. "Valentine's Day Gift Shop" is printed, up on the top, against a blue sky background, while "Math Word Problems" is printed, down below, on an orange walkway. The header is illustrated with a brick gift shop, in various shades of pink, with a blue door and window. The shingled roof is decorated with 3 red hearts and one of the gift shop items (a heart-shaped box of chocolates) is shown on one side of the store. The front of the shop features 2 green bushes and a dark pink welcome mat. The store is sitting on a nice green lawn. In the background, trees of different shapes and sizes can be seen in the colors of solid green and pink, along with some that are striped in the colors of pink and cream. The illustrated "Valentine's Day Gift Shop Math Word Problem - Set 1" instruction sheet has the title in bold black print. Below that are directions. Underneath the directions are materials included in the activity set ("Items for Sale", "Sale Item Cards", "Task Cards", "Worksheet"), all in bold black print. Below these headings are illustrations of the various items. The illustrated "Valentine's Day Gift Shop For Sale" card has the title in bold red print. Eight valentine items for sale, in the gift shop, are shown with price tags ranging from $3.25-$22.95. Items include a boxed heart-shaped ring, a bottle of perfume with a heart-shaped top, a valentine card, red and pink heart-shaped balloons, red and pink bouquets of long-stemmed roses tied up with ribbon, a heart-shaped box of chocolates tied up with a bow, a cute brown teddy bear with hearts on its feet and a ribbon around its neck, and a beaded bracelet with a heart charm. The sale card items match the pictures of the priced gifts on the "Valentine's Day Gift Shop For Sale" sheet. The recording sheets have a place for children to print both their name and the date at the top. They are decorated with a red heart in the upper, right-hand corner. Up at the top of these pages are a set of directions. Below the directions are 6 boxes. Five of the boxes have a heart tag with "Card Number" printed under it. Next to the tag, there is a line with "Answer" printed below it. Down at the bottom of each box, "Show your work here." is written, with an arrow pointing up on each side. The last box is set up the same as the first 5, but it has no heart tag for a card number. Instead, it has directions allowing children to buy 2 items, of their choice, from the gift shop. Children have to record what items they bought, show their work (in the space provided), and write their answer (on the line provided). The "Answer Keys" sheet has a title written in bold red text. It is illustrated with 4 different pictures of answer keys (one for task cards 1-6, one for task cards 7-12, one for task cards 13-18, and another for task cards 19-20). The illustrations are an exact replica of the recording sheets, except that "Answer Key", with task number cards after it, is written in red on the "Name" line, and the heart tags are filled in with black numbers. In addition, the answers and work are also supplied in red. The task cards are all illustrated, on the left side, with 1 of 2 pictures. Half of the cards have a cute, black-haired boy dressed in his Valentine's Day best. He is wearing black shoes with white soles and a white, collared, short-sleeved shirt with a red heart on the chest. His pants are red and he is wearing a yellow belt with a yellow heart buckle. The other half of the task cards feature a cute, black-haired girl with a red bow in her hair. She is wearing the same outfit as the boy, with the exception of a pink shirt. All of the task cards say "Set 1" in the bottom, right-hand corner. "Valentine's Day Shopping" is printed, in black, at the top of each card. Below that, a word problem in written in black. Each card has a red heart tag, with a back number, underneath the story problem. To set up this activity, the header and direction card are laid out in the middle of the playing area. The "Valentine's Day Gift Shop For Sale" card is then laid out, with the priced sale item cards surrounding it. The task cards are then mixed up and placed, face down, in a draw pile. Children are given a recording sheet and fine-tip marker. To use this set, children pick a task card off the top of the deck. They then write the number of the card, in the empty tag, in the first box on their recording sheet. Next, they read the story problem, and use the price information on the "Valentine's Day Gift Shop For Sale" card or individual priced item cards to solve the problem. They write down their addition problem and answer on the recording sheet. Children then continue to pick 4 more task cards and follow the above procedure. Then, they complete the last box, on the recording sheet, by selecting 2 items of their choice. Once a recording sheet has been completed, children use the answer key to check the answers of the numbered task cards. This set could either be used by an individual child or by a group of children. If used with a group, additional copies of the recording sheets would simply need to be made. This set would make a wonderful addition to a 2nd or 3rd grade classroom to be used during Math Centers around Valentine's Day! It would also be great to have in a household with children of the above age! I am hoping to find it a good home.
