Description: An extraordinarily scarce original copy of Kirk Anderson's Valley Tan. Vol 1, No. 8. December 24th 1858 As the first **Non-Mormon** newspaper in the Utah Territory, Anderson's Valley Tan gained popularity among US soldiers having entered the region near the conclusion of the Utah War. The Valley Tan was particularly noteworthy for its coverage of the events at Mountain Meadows as they emerged, and commanded an intensely adversarial relationship with Brigham Young and Mormon leadership. The territory's legislature declared the paper a "libelous and scurrilous sheet" and gunfights outside of the paper's printing office became a consistent threat. Anderson sold the paper the next May and disappeared into the expanse of the Western unknown rather than recorded history. Later copies of the Tan thus exclude his name in the header. Copies of the Valley Tan are a distinct rarity in Utah, nearly all having been discarded or otherwise destroyed. In 20 years of working with Utah rare books and manuscripts, this is the only copy of the Tan I have encountered that bears Anderson's glorious original masthead. This comes from my personal collection. Condition: Complete as issued. Framed as seen. Sold by: Ryan Roos Rare Books of Ephraim, Utah
