Description: Rare promotional art photo of a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 Intercontinental flying under the flagship banner of VARIG Brasil Airlines as it takes off from McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach, CA. PP-VOP was one of the first two McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft delivered to Varig Airlines in 1991. Varig was the first airline in Latin America to operate the MD-11, which was used on the routes between São Paulo, Rio, Paris, and Amsterdam. The MD-11 was a cutting-edge aircraft with a computerized cockpit, laser gyroscopes for navigation, and winglets to reduce drag and save fuel. VARIG (acronym for Viação Aérea Rio-Grandense, Rio Grandean Airways) was the first airline founded in Brazil, in 1927. From 1965 until 1990, it was Brazil's leading airline and virtually its only international one. In 2005, Varig went into judicial restructuring, and in 2006 it was split into two companies – Flex Linhas Aéreas, informally known as "old" Varig, heir to the original airline – now defunct, and "new" Varig, a new company, fully integrated into Gol Airlines. Most likely used for promotional/marketing/shareholder publications and presentations. Very nice vintage image. Measures 8 x 10. Provenance McDonnell Douglas.
