This was used on the Cameo record label. This label sold for 25 cents and was a budget label. For the time period, the recorded sound is quite good compared to other record labels at the time. The group was one of the 1st on disc to record dance music with strong jazz overtones. The group was not from California (by all reports they never even played in that state), but formed in Ohio by banjoist Ray Kitchenman in 1921. The line up on the sessions during this period included a group of some of the finest jazz musicians available. Some that could be heard on the recordings were: Bill Moore (Trumpet) - One of the first African American jazz musician to work with a white band. Red Nichols (Trumpet), Chelsea Quealey (Trumpet), Adrian Rollini (Bass Sax), Bobby Davis (Clarinet), Jimmy Duff (Clarinet), Ray Kitchenman (Banjo), Tommy Felline (Banjo), Stan King (Drums), Freddy Cusick (Tenor Sax), Tommy Dorsey (Trombone), Irving Brodsky (Piano) This combination of jazz musicians produced a society dance band with real bite and verve. Every recorded session is creative with ample room for extended solos from each musician. Although their time in the limelight was brief, with several of their members going on to bigger and better things by decade's end, the California Ramblers stand as the quintessential white dance band of the 1920s. ******************************************************* The CD presents a selection of their Cameo Disc recordings made in 1925 to 1928. These recordings were made at the peak of their recording career. Arrangements are very lively with jazz solos throughout the sessions.
