Description: Offered by Antique American Indian Art, llc---AAIA--- Very Fine Pima or Early Papago Indian Winnowing Basket; WhirlwindLate 19th or Early 20th century; 3.5" deep x 15"diameter Very fine weave with whirlwind motif. Woven with willow and devils claw seed pod husk. The Pima and Papago are from Southern Arizona. Interestingly, this has a square knot start which usually indicates an early Papago basket (or even possibly an early Maricopa basket which would be quite rare) and would push the dating of this basket into the late 19th century. A particularly handsome basket with dense pattern and small, even weave.
