Description: A stunning rectangular Minton, Mintons oyster plate with 4 scallop shell wells and a central sauce or lemon well, all resting atop a bed of seaweed on a basket-weave designed platter. This is pictured on pages 39 and 41 of Karsnitz book, "Oyster Plates" and is marked 4 stars, meaning very rare. It measures 9 1/4 x 7 3/4 and, aside from crazing, is in perfect condition. "Mintons" is impressed on the back; this was used from about 1871 onwards. In 1842 Minton introduced an impressed cypher for the year of production. The cypher on this plate looks to me like a circle with baseball curves and that is the cypher for 1892 but others list it as 1882. There is also the diamond shaped Registry of Designs stamp potentially imparting much information on its creation---bundle, class, day, month and year. However, it is hard to make out. I acquired the plate as a majolica dealer in New Orleans in the late 90's, wanting it for my all white oyster plate display at a beach condo. The condo was damaged by Hurricane Ivan and the plate has been in a box in a closet ever since. Your turn to enjoy! Shipped Priority Mail with added insurance and signature required.
