Description: These are fairly large and relatively heavy volumes, measuring approximately 9.75 wide x 12.25 tall, and weighing close to 12 pounds for the set. The covers to both volumes have relatively minor wear and rubbing, mostly at the edges & corners. (Considering the age of these books, they’re in uncommonly good condition.) All page edges gilt. The bindings of both volumes are still quite firm, (but should be handled with care in any case). No writing found in either volume, and very little foxing overall, but the flyleaf that follows the front free endpaper in one of the volumes is very foxed, much more on the front than on the back. There are also, almost inevitably in a book this age, some small spots of unknown origin here and there randomly within the volumes. All illustrations and maps present, and in very good condition. With 69 (vol. 1) + 79 (vol. 2) steel engravings, and 2 maps (1 per volume) accounted for, which accords exactly with the list of plates in the front of each volume. Please examine photos closely if interested, and feel free ask a question or to request an additional photo. No copies currently (11/8/22) for sale at any of the used and rare book websites, and in significantly better condition than 90% of the copies I’ve seen over the years. Also nicer than the large majority of those that are recorded as having sold at auction, when a description was given.
