Three Ground Cavalry Troops of the 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment (Armored) were detached from the 1st Armored Division at Fort Hood, TX and attached to US Army, Pacific as a Separate Armored Cavalry Squadron circa mid-1967. During Vietnam war, these troops were sent to support Task Force OREGON - later 23rd Infantry Division (AMERICAL) based in Chu Lai, RVN on a temporary basis. In July 1968, Troop D(AIR), 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment (Armored) deployed to Vietnam from Fort Hood and attached to the 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile). In 1969, D Troop(AIR) rejoined the 1st Squadron's 3 Ground Troops in Chu Lai to support the 23rd Infantry AMERICAL Division. The 1st Squadron (all 4 Troops) departed Vietnam May 10, 1972. D Troop(AIR) assets remaining in Vietnam were used to form D Troop(AIR), 17th Cavalry which was activated April 30, 1972.
