During Vietnam War, Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron HMM-261 served as part of the United States Marine Corps' aviation component in Vietnam. The squadron was first deployed to Vietnam in 1965 and was stationed at the Marble Mountain Air Facility near Da Nang.HMM-261 was equipped with CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters, which were used for a variety of missions including troop transport, resupply, and medical evacuation. The squadron played a key role in supporting U.S. and allied ground forces in Vietnam, often flying in dangerous and challenging conditions.One of the squadron's most notable missions was its participation in Operation Hastings in July 1966. During this operation, HMM-261 transported U.S. Marines and supplies to landing zones in the hills near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Vietnam.
