Franz Windhager (born December 3, 1879 in Vienna; June 14, 1959 there) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist. He studied at the Vienna Academy with Christian Griepenkerl and Franz Rumpler and in between 1900 at the Academy in Karlsruhe with Ludwig Schmid-Reutte. Study trips took him through Germany and Italy. In 1909 he became a member of the Vienna Knstlerhaus. Windhager worked as a painter and illustrator (e.g. Grillparzer, Der arme Spielmann, 1913). During the First World War, Windhager was artistically active as a war painter in the Russian and Italian theater of war. In the post-war period, Windhager continued to work in Vienna and painted, among other works, architectural views. He was also known for his colorful genre paintings.
