Located in the heart of the Jardin Massey which is today classified as a remarkable garden label by the DRAC, the orangery of the Jardin Massey is a 19th century Napoleon III style metal building classified as a historic monument by decree of July 27, 1995. After having acquired numerous lands to create an arboretum, the French botanist Monsieur Placide Massey (1777-1853) redesigned the garden and located his house in the center with the project of a winter garden attached to the central observation tower. On his death, this heritage was bequeathed to the town of Tarbes which transformed the unfinished dwelling house into a museum and decided in 1880 to create a monumental greenhouse composed of a hothouse, a temperate greenhouse and an orange greenhouse. hence its name “Orangerie”. Degraded during the 20th century, the orangery was the subject of a restoration campaign in 1980. The city of Tarbes restored the orangerie to its initial use as a greenhouse and highlights its historical heritage, a precious witness to local history. The Massey Garden orangerie is a building reserved for the use of gardeners and promoted during occasional visits on the occasion of European Heritage Days.
