Description: After more than 60 years of collecting books, it is time to move my collections along to new homes. In 1982 I ran across a 17 volume deluxe edition set of Victor Drury’s 1885 epic work, “History of Rome and of the Roman People.” Drury (1811-1894) was a French scholar who wrote extensively on ancient Roman and Greek civilizations and his books were very detailed and extensively illustrated and printed for subscribers from 1885-1887. This deluxe set was limited to 1000 copies, to subscribers only, and the set is hand printed number 294 of 1000. The book bindings while beautiful, were in poor condition and I planned to work with my older brother who does bookbinding and repair to restore the collection. Over the years, smaller book projects took priority and these sets have sat on one of my shelves, loved and cared for, but not ever restored. Now, my older brother is not able to do the work and it is time to move these items along. Some of the books have pages that are loosely attached and I have decided to recover some of the maps, prints, plates, and prints as they are interesting, historical, and would look great framed. This colorful lithographed map is from Volume II Part 1 of the set printed in 1885 and shows the, “ SPAIN FOR THE WARS OF THE SCIPIOS” which was from 211-206BC. Scipio waged a long and successful campaign that drove Carthage from the Iberian Peninsula and set the Roman Republic for further expansion. The detailed map was lithographed by W. & AK Johnson of Edinburgh, shows the regions, cities, major rivers, and seas as they were known by the Romans during this period. The map is the original (not a copy) from the book, is printed on linen vellum paper (medium heavy) which measures 11 3/8” x 7 1/2”. The map consists of one complete page of the book and was not folded. The back of the map is blank and has no printing. This is a very clean historical map with great detail and would make for an interesting display. To ensure it arrives safely, it will ship flat and be enclosed in an archival sleeve suitable for long or short term storage. As everything needs to find a new home, I will provide FREE SHIPPING to within the US.
