Description: Vintage 1950s Japanese Folk Art Kokeshi Dolls Elderly Couple Grandma And Grandpa This listing is for a pair of vintage Japanese folk art hand turned and hand painted Elder Kokeshi dolls. These dolls originated in the mountain villages of Miyagi Prefecture (north of Tokyo) in the 1800s. Traditionally, Kokeshi were given as gifts on the birth of a child. These wooden dolls are typically pin-shaped with no arms or legs. However, they are often decorated in traditional dress with vivid colors and delicately inked features. This pair of Kokeshi dolls are depicted as Elders - Grandma and Grandpa. The female doll is stooped while the male doll holds a staff. Apparently sold in pairs, the base of the grandfather doll is stamped in red with the signature of the artist. The grandmother doll has no stamp or other markings on the base. They are in very good vintage condition with no apparent damage. It is recommended that you view all pictures in the gallery as they are included as part of the item description.
